Bhaktapur is the city of devotees. 'Bhakta' means devotees and 'pur' means city. It is one of the most ancient towns in the country and is said that there was a dense settlement here during the Lichhavi Period. This City was developed as a trade centre then by Amshuverma. He Established a local self-government to look after it. In the Malla Period, Bhaktapur city was developed as the capital of Nepal and it was called Tripura. The palace area was the residence of the Malla Kings. All the monuments, artifacts and shrines were built in the period of 17th and 18th century. So, in the Bhaktapur Palace museum, paintings are mostly found belonging to 16th to 19th centuries. Bhaktapur Darbar Square contains the most attractive Nepalese architecture with art and crafts on wood, metal, stone and terracotta. In 1696 A.D., King Bhupatindra Malla build 99 Chowks and three storey Nepalese style 55 windowed palace. This palace is also called Pachapanna Jhyale (55 windows) Darbar. It contains fifty five carved windows and its lower storey has finely carved windows and doors.
Various temples, forums and shrine surround the Bhaktapur Darbar Square. King Bhupatindra Malla built the five storey Pagoda style Nyatapole temple in 1720 A.D. This is one of the most beautiful multi-storied and tallest teemple in Nepal. The stairway leading to the temple is lined with pairs of figures of human beings identified as powerful wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins and Goddesses.
There is a one storeyed Bhairabnath Temple also called Bhairab Kashinath Temple which was built by Jagat Jyoti Malla. King Bhupatindra Malla also rebuilt this temple in the form of three storeyed Nepali style in 1718 A.D.
